Message from school Chairman
Mr. Joseph Gathonga Chairman KAG School
It is with great pleasure that I present this report through our annual newsletter - Angaza. I do indeed thank God for the year that was 2014. The year went on smoothly and we were able to meet most or all our obligations and set targets within the year despite several challenges especially with the devolved system of government. As an institution, some long term goals have been achieved e.g. we have fully paid for the school bus. We have experienced tremendous success in operations (running of the school) and sponsorship really helps the finances at this difficult time. This calls for much appreciation for all your efforts and contributions .Thank you very much.
The school has maintained a focus on the delivery of its core functions: eg -delivery of high quality education and nurturing of our pupils in extra curriculum activities so as to promote talent and equip men and women who can compete favourably in the available job market both locally, nationally and internationally.
All our activities were built on last year’s progress and consistent with our long term goals as demonstrated by level after level of growth.
All these achievements have not been without challenges noticing the many competitors around .I want to acknowledge the tireless efforts both physically, financially, advice and the encouragement from:-
- Rosemary and indeed the entire Emley Africa Educational Project team and all well-wishers.
- The board of management.
- The headmaster and his teaching team.
- All support staff at the school.
May god bless you all.
Your consistence and tireless effort depicts commitment to a good cause and only time will prove the lessons we have learned.
I am also very grateful to the KAG family for their support both physically, morally and in the implementation of all our projects and activities.
Key achievements include:
- Completion of school bus payment
- Library book shelves & books
- Computers (IT Centre)

MERRY CHRISTMASS AND BLESSED 2015
Message from the Head teacher
It’s a great honor and privilege to write in this 12th edition of our school newsletter. The wheel of education both co-curricular and curricular activities continue to roll in this great school. Our music team continued to do well and we were happy to represent the entire Kwale County in a number of musical items in the Coast region competition which were held in Malindi, where we emerged the best in two items and we were privileged to represent the entire coast region at national levels. Bravo to our teams and the teachers!
Not only did we shine in co-curricular activities but we also emerged position two out of four hundred schools in our county in this year’s mock exam. I want to thank the teachers who have been supporting me in steering the wheel of education in KAG school .I want also to thank our disciplined pupils who made our work very smooth and easy while running the institution. They have shown exemplary example to the neighboring schools who want advice on how to perform likewise.
KAG continues to grow as days go by, next year the Board of Governors is considering setting up boarding facilities where class seven and eight will be required to board to help their learning. We are optimistic this dream will come true. I am sure we shall continue the path of making our pupils to rise and shine as our motto says.
We were again lucky to host our UK leaders Mrs. Rosemary Donnan and Dr. Jim Donnan. They were able to attend this years class eight prayer day, cataloging library books, visiting our classes and as well as visiting sponsored pupils at their homes where they erected a number of mosquito nets in view of kicking out malaria in Kenya. They gave a number of presents to the sponsored pupils from their sponsors in the UK. They were also able to secure support of our library toilet which is now under construction and it will be in use in the next couple of days. Well done Rose and Jim for you tireless effort and devotion you have so far showed toward the school.
Due to tireless effort of Dr Jim and Rosemary who secured donation for the purchase of computers in school from Horbury and Ossett Phoenix Rotary club in the UK we were able to start our computer classes and our pupils are able to perform simple task on their own. We are optimistic in future they will be in a position to even tackle complex tasks using the computer. This is a new era and we must encourage our children to have computer knowledge. We are striving to make it a reality and we continue to seek more donations for more computers and internet which is expensive.
Mr. Harrison Kamere, Headmaster KAG School.
I wish everyone Merry Xmas and happy new year 2015

Imagine how heaven will be: The best trees Wangari Mathai went to plant, the best songs Angela Chibalonza sung, best of all, there will be no alshabab coz Saitoti and Ojode walitangulia. No over speeding because Michuki is there. No extra tuition coz Mutula ashafika ….. What a place to be! But the most important thing hakuna wezi coz wewe bado uko duniani.
One day mouth said to leg and hand, “My brothers, can’t you see how our sister stomach exploits us! The two of you go to get food, you prepare it and pass it onto to me. I chew it and make it ready for stomach”
“You are right brother Mouth,’’ Hand said. They decided not look for food from then on.
They went on being weak till they died.
What do you learn from this?

If all trees die
by Zuena Sadiq
If all trees die, if all trees go
The land will be brown and bare
Soil erosion will be more and more
And no plant will grow
If all trees die, if all trees go
Birds, bees and beetles will daily wonder
Where did our beautiful flowers go?
Where shall we raise our young ones?
If all trees die, if all trees go
Where shall we get our food?
We shall get weaker and weaker
Till we can work no more
Top ten slogans on save the environment
Environment club patron, Mr. Pepela
- We were born to help the world not to destroy it, then why are we destroying it?
- Only when the last tree has died, the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught, we will realize that we cannot eat money
- There is sufficiency in the world for man’s need, but not for man’s greed.
- Save the environment and you will save the life and the future
- Let’s go green to get our globe clean
- Hungry and the Earth will serve, thirsty and the seas will water! Do you still want to cut that all?
- Man-made global warming, the biggest scum in the history of mankind to fulfill his greediness. Understand this or nature will teach you.
- Global warming: we have a solution, stop pollution!
- If today you will burn fossil, fuel tomorrow, you might be fossil under the sea
- You can’t change the past but you can change the future, it is upon you, what you want!

In the view of all that God has done to our school, what can we say? If God is for us who can be against us? Certainly not even one.
So remember us, our God, for good, according to all that we have done for these people- NEHEMIAH: 5:19
God’s blessings to everyone in KAG community

STORY TIME
Suleiman Mkulu
Believe it or not, there was a man who controlled a big turn able bridge. For ships to pass through the river, the bridge was placed with its length running parallel with the banks. At other times when a train would need to pass across the river, it was turned sideways across the river.
One evening as the passenger train was approaching; the man realized that the locking control on the river side was not working. He ran over the bridge to manually hold the lever in place or else the 300 passengers would plunge into the river. These lives depend on his strength.
Then from across the bridge he heard his son shout “Dad where are you?”
The train was too close to allow the man to save his son and rush both to the lever. Either the people nor the train or his little son must die.
The man held on to the lever and the train sped swiftly and safely past him, unaware of his devastating grief as his son was no more
THE ABAWANGA
The Abawanga are a group of the Luhya people and had a historical Kingdom within the present day Kenya. They mainly occupy Kakamega County, one of the most densely populated counties in Kenya. The Wanga Kingdom was the most highly developed and centralized kingdom in Kenya’s entire history before the advent of British colonialism in the early 1900s.
The Wanga ancestors were part of the migration that settled in the Kampala area and formed the Buganda Kingdom. In their culture, a king’s brother or cousin from the paternal line is eligible for succession to the throne and thus poses a threat to the reigning monarch. Accordingly, a Baganda Omulangira (prince) called Kaminyi, a son of Mawanda of Buganda fled to the Tiriki area in the current Western Province area in the upheaval that followed the murder of his father by a group of Ganda princes led by his cousin Mwanga I of Buganda. There Kaminyi became a ruler and was succeeded by his son Wanga, who took the title Nabongo and established the Wanga Kingdom in the 18th Century.

Settlement
Today the Wanga predominantly inhabit Butere/Mumias District, Kakamega County of Kenya.
The kingdom was visited by Arab and Swahili slave traders which explains the high incidence of Islamic presence amongst the Wanga compared to other Luhya communities. The slave traders operated from Mumias) against the fragmented Bukusu in the north and the Jo-Ugenya in the south from whom they captured a lot of slaves and exported.

The Wanga Kingdom is a confederation of 22 co-equal clandoms called Tsihanga
The following are some of the Tsihanga (clans) of Abawanga 1. Abashitsetse 2. Abakolwe 3.Abaleka 4Abachero 5. Abashikawa 6.Abamurono 7. Abashieni 8. Abamwima 9.Abamuniafu 10. Abambatsa
The common denominator of administration at all levels except the family, was the clan Council of Elders headed by a chief or Liguru.
Traditionally agriculture was an important aspect among the Abawanga they practiced crop farming. They planted sorghum and millet and also engaged in pastoralism as well as fishing and animal hunting of gazelles and antelopes.
Gazelle horns were used as a communication tool in the ancient days to summon the Abawanga for meetings. The Wanga were also very advanced in iron works.

Ugali, known as obusuma in LuWanga, is the traditional food of the Wanga.
Ugali is made from either maize flour or cassava, or millet flour. It is usually served with chicken. While the Abawanga eat many other foods, a meal is never complete without some Ugali.

Message from Rosemary
Dear Parents, Teachers and Sponsors. It is with great pleasure that Jim and I have managed to arrive again in Kenya this year to share with you such wonderful fellowship and receive such a warm welcome. We have so many friends here now after 15 years, we feel totally at home.
This year because of British Government travel advisories we had accepted that we were unable to be with you for graduation. All the tour operators in the UK have cancelled beach holidays in Kenya for the foreseeable future. Fortunately, for us, two English friends of ours who come and work in health in Kenya each year found Somak, a Kenyan company who could arrange our visit. It was a very long journey and more expensive than normal but we made it avoiding Mombasa, the forbidden area. We flew from London to Nairobi and then took a small 12 seater plane to Ukunda. After arriving safely, tunamshukuru Mungu, we thank God for finding the means to be with you.
This visit, we have been very busy teaching the children to make elastic band bracelets which they really enjoyed and cataloguing books in the library. We were so pleased to see the children so keen on learning about computer technology. In our spare time, which rapidly got filled, we went to church and did baking in friends’ houses. We made scones, soup, biscuits and cakes and they were interested to make Yorkshire pudding.
The sponsored children are all doing amazingly well, especially when you know of the challenges in these children’s lives. One of these children lives in a house where the roof has been destroyed by rain. Needless to say we have helped in that case. Many of these children are top of their class. We are also very proud this year to hear that 3 children sponsored at K.A.G School and later at secondary School, one who is completely orphaned, have achieved the B grade required to get a Kenya Government loan to go to University and several others are in other colleges. This is all thanks to the dedication of Mr. Harrison and his excellent team of very hard working teachers and your sponsorship.
Awabariki Mungu. God Bless you all.
Rosemary
