Message from school Chairman

Mr. Joseph Gathonga Chairman KAG School

I feel honoured today as we mark the final days of the year. It has been great to be part of the Emley fraternity. The year has been great despite the covid-19 pandemic, learning has been smooth. No cases of covid infectious\ hospitalization in our school and for this we thank God and the school administration for maintaining the protocols. School projects are ongoing as we prepare for the new CBC system of education. We hope and in deed work hard to achieve the minimum required to be accredited papers to run a junior secondary school. Thank you, mama Rose and Jim, for your continued support and guidance. Otherwise farewell Merry Christmas and a victorious new year.

Joseph

Message from the Director

I feel privileged again to participate in writing the 19th edition of our school magazine. Welcome all.

I must start by confessing that the past two years has been difficult and challenging but though challenging it allowed people to think outside the box. It was a shocker when the government one evening without enough notice closed all schools. We had to abide by the directions and we released our student to go home. We were worried of our student’s security but it was beyond our reach. We kept our hopes high that we would be allowed to go back to our institution but by each day break the hopes kept fading. Teachers had no income and were suffering and for most of them they were being locked out of their houses by unrealistic landlords. I thank God we agreed to engage teachers in giving homework to our students every Friday In return they earned half of their salary which they could pay their house rent and at least get some food stuffs. Our students were also supplied with food items thanks to our friends in the UK. All this taught us that the little thing we ignore matters a lot. It has not been rosy but with the assistance from our great friends from UK we were able focus even further ahead.

At last schools were reopened in two phases starting with examination classes. This also disorganized the academic calendar.

In March 2020 our candidates sat for their final examinations and with all the difficulties our candidates performed well and all our students were able to join secondary school. As teachers and mentors, we were proud of them.

Year 2022 we shall have two national examinations and again it has been a marathon and we are as well very much optimistic that both classes will do well in their final examination.

Our school, like other schools has been implementing a competency-based curriculum (CBC) which is underway. It is with this view in mind that we decided to start preparing to host a junior secondary school.

I am happy to report that the Rotary club in the UK accepted to sponsor a septic tank for the junior Secondary. We hope we shall get other well-wishers to support in construction of three blocks of toilets (that is for boys, girls and for teachers.) and laboratories that are needed in a junior secondary.

I must thank all the well wishers in UK, USA, Australia and other places for their continued support to our school and all the sponsors who are continuing in sponsoring our students in school. We don’t take it for granted. Thank you so much we look forward to walking with you throughout this noble journey.

Allow me to wish Merry Christmas and happy New Year 2022!

Harrison Kamere

KITCHEN AND DINING HALL DEPARTMENT

Emley school kitchen and dining hall was officially fully operational from May 1st 2021. We really thank our UK sponsors through the school management for the effort they put to make sure that now our pupils can have their meals in time within the school. We have enough cooks who really work within the clock to make sure that meals are well cooked, served in time and in enough portions. Our pupils enjoy their foods which are served in a balanced diet. We also receive appreciations from our parents and guardians for our schools best service delivery in that sector something that has encouraged more parents to want their pupils learning in our school. We finally appreciate the school administration and management for the provision of the modern kitchen facilities and enough food supply to ensure our kids are served with the best foods. We wish all a Merry x-mas and a Happy new year 2022 God willing.

SPORTS DESK

From our desk we the sports club, take this opportunity to appreciate everyone for continued and tremendous support. It’s through dedication and hard work that has enabled us to prosper progressively in co-curriculum activities. (Ball games, athletics, music and drama)

Generally, this year we did not get the opportunity to participate in the games with other schools due to Covid-19 and government restrictions. But after resuming studies we organized and competed within our school. We had inter-class competions where we participated in ball games, athletics, music and drama which helped the learners discover and nature their talents. Through our administration we also appreciated the learners who participated in the games by giving them learning materials to boost their morale in the activities. Sincerely, sport really enables our pupils to develop physically, mentally and emotionally both in class and outside the class.

We thank the administration for their continued support and also our dear friends in UK for their financial support, providing tools and equipment that enabled us to run our activities well.

Finally, we us a club, we take this time to wish everyone a happy and merry x-mass and a prosperous happy new year 2022.

LIBRARY AND ICT DEPARTMENT

In the year 2021, we have had 3 significant changes in the ICT and library departments. First, we had to restructure the book shelves and they are currently well fitted on to the walls of the library. This has created even more space in the room to allow other learning activities to take place. Secondly the school has now upgraded its Wi-Fi system to a more efficient and faster network compared to the previous one. Thirdly the computer room has been enlarged to allow more space for more computers. Lastly the school also purchased one more projector to facilitate easier audio visual learning. As a department we appreciate all efforts from the school management and our friends from UK for making this dream become a reality. Happy 2022

NURSERY SECTION

Our nursery school section was launched in the academic year of (2001) having very few pupils. Since then, the number of pupils has been increasing rapidly. Our nursery section was situated together with the church till the year 2019 end of third term when it was attached to the primary section.

From then the environment has been very conducive as the pupils are able to move freely having spacious playing ground and even the classes being big enough for free movement of pupils where pupils learn through play and play items freely.

In addition, the turnout of kids this year has been encouraging compared to the previous years due to our best learning facilities and quality services we offer.

We are very glad for that and we hope God will bless us more and more in coming years in order to get large numbers of pupils. Otherwise we appreciate the immense support and through belief in the Almighty God we know he shall grant us our wish.

Madam Jane

BOARDING DEPARTMENT

As an education Centre EMLEY school started a boarding facility in the year 2015 in the third term. The number of boarding pupils then was 54 in classes seven and eight. The graph keeps on changing as per the years but we thank God that ours is steady. This year we have 62 pupils boarding. The main essence of boarding was to give candidate and pre-candidate pupils more time in school with their teachers to study in preparations for their final examinations. It was mainly for class 7 and 8, but we now have pupils from other classes more so those who live far away from school. Since then, we can now see that our performances in the national exams have tremendously risen somethings that has made our school a champion competing and beating giant schools within our locality (county and regional) levels. We really thank the school administration for the noble idea that has helped our learners achieve more and prosper academically. We ask that God grants you a merry Christmas and a happy new year 2022.

Mr Chris and Evans.

Story time

Many years ago when computers were still new technology, Nagi knew very little about computers. He attended a job interview and was asked to identify a mouse in a computer room. He frantically looked under the desks and chairs. “There are no mice in this room,” he said. Then he was asked to point at the keyboard. He pointed at a bunch of keys that were hanging on a board near the door. When he was asked where the monitor was, he said “I don’t know where the monitor is. It’s many years since we left school.”

FUN SPOT

On kamal’s first visit to a desert, he felt very thirsty. He came across an old woman selling ties.

“can I have some water?” kamal asked. “I don’t have any water,” replied the woman. “but I have ties.”

“I don’t want a tie.” Kamal shouted, “I need water.”

“over that sand dune is a restaurant,” replied the woman.

Kamal walked towards the sand dune. Four hours later, he crawled back gasping. “They won’t let me in without a tie”

The woman said “sorry, I have sold out all the ties.” That was the time he started thinking why he refused the ties.

Message from Jim Donnan

In March 2019 we visited Kenya with 2 Rotary friends, (one of whom is a specialist teacher of very young children), who reorganised the junior nursery class to be a ‘learn through play’ class. Little did we know that in March 2020 our next planned visit would be prevented by an alarming rate of spread of a new virus named Covid 19. This virus was killing many people in the UK and the total of deaths up to today is approx.148, 000 and the daily death rate over 100.

In 2021 again we were not able to travel to Kenya and, at this moment in time, we do not know if it will be safe to come in 2022.

In March 2020 the schools closed suddenly in Kenya and it became quickly obvious that, with the school now receiving no income, our charity, Emley African Educational Project, would need to support the teachers. The charity used up all its reserves to pay the teachers’ rent for 6 months and in return they set work for pupils to collect from school each week. Our pupils were too poor to gain much from the government’s TV and internet learning packages due to the total absence of home computers. These lessons were much appreciated by children, teachers and pupils, and worked very well. A birthday fundraiser for Rosemary’s birthday raised £2000 and enabled basic food stuffs such as maize, oil etc to be given to teachers, ancillary staff and sponsored children and their families.

The School opened for some classes in September 2020, but did not fully open until January 21. The government introduced many new Covid measures that the school had to adopt. This was a costly exercise. These were as follows--- installing running water inside the school gate to allow hand washing, water stations outside the classrooms, sanitisers, temperature checking equipment, masks, single desks (previously double). This latter necessitated the double desks to be divided in 2, and the purchase of many new single desks to maintain social distancing in classrooms. All food had to be prepared on site, rather than off site and brought in. This necessitated finishing the dining room and kitchen quickly. Two special cookers were also needed. Thanks to the huge generosity of 2 sponsors, the new cookers and many single desks were paid for.

We had built a new classroom the year before which helped greatly in providing social distancing.

The Future

The government proposes to change the education system to 6 classes in Primary, 3 classes in a Junior High School and 3 classes in a Senior High School. On discussion with the headmaster Harrison, and the board of governors in Kenya, it was agreed that as we had enough land, we should plan to create a Junior High School attached to the Primary School. If we did not do this we would lose two classes from the primary, and we already have enough classrooms built to accommodate the junior secondary. We already have a large and well equipped library with books for older children and a computer room, although we will in future need more laptops. The primary (6 classes), and the junior secondary (3 classes) will be separated on site as per government conditions. . We need to build a science lab, a workshop and new toilets. Horbury and Ossett Phoenix Rotary club have provided funds for the septic tank so building the toilets is dependent on acquisition of the necessary funds.

It remains for me to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a safe and hopefully more normal 2022.
